Language Courses Abroad – Choose Your Course Type

With so many worldwide destinations to choose from it’s extremely exciting choosing where you want to take your language course abroad. From Ibiza to Panama for Spanish, and Brighton to Vancouver for English, there is a lot to consider when choosing a destination. Once you know where you want to go it is also important to consider the types of courses that are available. Most people opt for a General Language course however, there are a number of different options that may be more suitable for you.

General Language Course

This is a group course that covers the ‘general’ use of the language from Beginners through to Advanced level. It usually consists of 15 – 20 hours per week, depending on the course, and classes are usually held in the mornings although some schools offer an afternoon option for those who like to get up a bit later. All fours skills are covered, along with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. There focus is on everyday language and communication.

Intensive Language Course

Intensive language course is a group course that also covers the ‘general’ use of the language from Beginners through to Advanced but usually consist of 25 – 30 hours per week and are aimed at learners who want to progress quickly in a short period of time. This type of course will have classes in the morning and the afternoon, often taught by different teachers.

One-to-One Language Course

One-to-One language courses allow learners to work on their own with the teacher, correct specific mistakes and covering areas that focus on the individual’s needs. These are great for improving quickly and can be combined with any of the other group courses.

Exam Preparation Course

Exam preparation courses are for those students who already have a good level of the language (usually a minimum of A2 or B1) and need or want to take an exam that will prove the level they have achieved. The preparation courses are generally designed to help learners understand the content and format of the exam, and to pass the exam. They are not generally designed to improve language ability, although this may be a bi-product of taking the course. There are exam preparation courses for a range of languages including English (IELTS, FCE, CAE, CPE), Spanish (A Level, DELE) French (DELF) and many others.

Business Language Courses

These courses are for learners who wish to improve their language skills for the work place. In order to take these courses learners generally need A2 or B1 level before they can join the class. The classes focus on business vocabulary and functional language that is needed in an office environment.

Language for Specific Purposes

These courses are similar to the business language courses but will focus on a specific industry. Examples of this are: law, engineering, aviation, oil and gas, fashion etc. These courses are for learners who wish to improve their language skills for a particular industry or subject area due to the fact that they either work in the area or want to, or study the subject or want to.
