Descended from Latin, it is mainly spoken in Catalonia, but is also used in the Balearic Islands, Andorra, Roussillon in South East France and parts of Sardinia. Catalan is actually said to be the eighth-most spoken language in the European Union, with a similar number of speakers to Swedish, Greek or Portuguese.
