Top 10 Informal Arabic Expressions: Speak Arabic Like a Native

Arabic is one of the most spoken languages in the world with more than 300 million speakers and the official language in 28 countries such as Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar or Morocco. Each region has its own particular informal Arabic or slang, but there is quite a few expressions that are understood by practically every Arabic speaker and these will help you to navigate easily though an informal conversation:

Yalla / يلا – Come on, let’s go
Sahtain/ صحتين – Bon appetit
Ya Amar / يا قمر – You look beautiful (literally: you are a moon)
Yee / يييه – Wow
Ya Haram / يا حرام – Poor thing (with sympathy)
Film hindi / فيلم هندي – No way! (Something is like an Indian movie when it seems surreal or impossible.)
NaHs / نحس – Bad luck or someone that brings bad luck
Rizil / رزل – Someone impertinent who gives others a hard time
Zayy 3elab kabriit / زي علب كبريت – Packed in like sardines (literally like a box of matches)
Mitdarwax / متدروخ – Dizzy or exhausted
