Bierkellers In Manchester: Get A Taste Of German Culture In The UK

by Maria Ansede

A “bierkeller” is a traditional German bar that serves a wide range of German beers and food, in a social atmosphere and there is no better place than a bierkeller to practise your German! If you are taking a German evening language course with Cactus in Manchester why not discover more about German gastronomy and culture by visiting one of these bierkellers – just a few minutes walk from our Manchester school.

The Bierkeller

The Bierkeller is a distinctive Bavarian bar right in central Manchester and just a 10 minute walk from where our German evening courses take place. The friendly staff, dressed in classic Bavarian clothes, and live entertainment from German Oompah bands during the weekends, make of The Bierkeller a perfect venue to enjoy the best craft beers from Germany. Its signature kaserkraner sausage and bratwust with German mustard or a Black Forest gateau is a delightful final touch for an authentic German evening.

Albert’s Schloss

Schloss is the German term for a palace or manor and Albert’s Schloss houses a bakery, bier palace, wunderbar and live performances that bring the German and Czech culture to Manchester with a unique and lively atmosphere. Selected as the best pub in Greater Manchester in 2017 by Pub & Bar Magazine, Albert’s bier palace offers top German and Czech beers, Alpine cocktails, homemade schnapps and ciders. Pretzels, doughnuts and cinnamon knots are freshly made in the Schloss’s bakery every day. Its homemade artisan sausages, chicken schnitzel and apple strudel are another great reason to check out this Bavarian palace, just 10 minutes away from our school.

Sandbar

If you are looking for a rare German beer at a different kind of British pub, Sandbar is a popular venue with a busy cultural programme. Known for its great selection of German and European beers Sandbar serves everything from Munich’s Hacker-Pschorr to Czech’s lemony pilsners with Sazz hops. Get into the Christmas Spirit!

German Christmas Markets for Everyone

written by Kathrin Schmitz

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to get into the Christmas spirit. If your enthusiasm needs a boost there is no better way to start off the Advent than to visit the most iconic of all Christmas shopping – a German Christmas Market!

The Atmosphere

Imagine walking around the old town of Nuremberg, Hamburg, Leipzig or Cologne, festively lit with a huge Christmas tree in the centre of the market square. All around the Christmas tree are small wooden stalls, and maybe an ice rink or carrousel. As you walk past these stalls where people sell arts and crafts, hand-made baubles and decorations, hand-knitted scarves, hats and gloves, you grab a hot pretzel and glühwein (mulled wine). The smell of freshly made Printen, Lebkuchen, Spekulatius – all traditional German Christmas cookies – is all around, while you pick up original hand-made gifts for your friends and family.

The Cactus Guide to the Kölner Karneval Cologne

kolnrt karneval

Our Guide to the Kölner Karneval Cologne

by Kathrin Schmitz

Kölle Alaaf! That is how you might be greeted in Cologne where today, on the 11th November at 11.11 am, the official Karneval season begins. Karneval, also known as the fifth season, is a tradition that goes back to the middle ages. Although it has changed a lot over the years, the Kölner Karneval as we know it nowadays is one of the biggest celebrations worldwide.

What Happens?

On the 11.11. at 11.11 am the celebrations begin on the Old Market in Cologne with concerts of the most popular carnival bands like Brings, Bläck Fööss and De Höhner. From November onwards there are many Sitzungen (stage shows) with music, dancing and stand-up comedy. It is an unspoken obligation to dress up when you attend a stage show or go to one of the parades which start on Weiberfastnacht (Fat Thursday). The highlight of Karneval is the big street parade on Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) which is the biggest and one of the oldest parades in Germany. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world come to see the 8km long parade consisting of colourful floats and street groups.

What to Say

These are some important expressions you might want to know when celebrating with all the Jecke (fools) in Cologne:
Kölle Alaaf: certainly the most important one; this is how you greet everyone that comes along your way
Bützchen: if you’re not a fan of kisses on the cheek, you’d better hide during the parade
Kamelle: this is what you need to shout at the street parade so people from the floats throw you candy
Fastelovend: meaning carnival in Cologne dialect

If Karneval inspires you to visit Germany and pick up some useful German, Cactus Language has German language courses in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne and a number of other German cities.
