Why Going Solo is Better for Language Learning

solo travel

I was never going to go.
If I waited for someone to come with me.

Of course it’s natural to feel a little nervous when taking a trip abroad on your own, however, travelling solo can bring some of the best experiences of your life – and it can also be a great way to accelerate your language learning.

Step Up, Speak Up

Travelling alone means that you do not have a companion to speak on your behalf. And this is great news when it comes to travelling abroad and learning a new language. Wherever you go, whatever you do, you have many excellent opportunities to practise with the locals – at the train station, in restaurants and cafes, and in the shops and markets. More often that not, if you are travelling alone the locals will want to have a little chat with you. Of course, your safety should be paramount, but as long as you employ common sense at all times there is no better way to gain confidence in the foreign language.

New Friends, Like-Minded Friends

If you are travelling alone and taking a language course you are more than likely to meet like-minded people from all over the world. You are likely to meet people with whom your common language is the local language, or you may decide together that you will only speak in the local language. This situation multiplies your opportunities for practise and learning and gives you the chance for lots of language practise outside of the classroom – which is nearly impossible if you are travelling with a first-language sharing friend from home.

Your Trip, Your Choices

As a solo traveller you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. If you choose to go out with your friends from your language school you can. But equally, if you prefer to stay in, watch a film in the language you are learning, listen to music in the language you are learning, or simply read the dictionary, you can. It’s up to you what you do and sometimes it can be a great feeling knowing that you do not have to consider anyone else’s preferences when it comes to chosing how you spend your time.

Language Courses Abroad – Choose Your Course Type

With so many worldwide destinations to choose from it’s extremely exciting choosing where you want to take your language course abroad. From Ibiza to Panama for Spanish, and Brighton to Vancouver for English, there is a lot to consider when choosing a destination. Once you know where you want to go it is also important to consider the types of courses that are available. Most people opt for a General Language course however, there are a number of different options that may be more suitable for you.

General Language Course

This is a group course that covers the ‘general’ use of the language from Beginners through to Advanced level. It usually consists of 15 – 20 hours per week, depending on the course, and classes are usually held in the mornings although some schools offer an afternoon option for those who like to get up a bit later. All fours skills are covered, along with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. There focus is on everyday language and communication.

Intensive Language Course

Intensive language course is a group course that also covers the ‘general’ use of the language from Beginners through to Advanced but usually consist of 25 – 30 hours per week and are aimed at learners who want to progress quickly in a short period of time. This type of course will have classes in the morning and the afternoon, often taught by different teachers.

One-to-One Language Course

One-to-One language courses allow learners to work on their own with the teacher, correct specific mistakes and covering areas that focus on the individual’s needs. These are great for improving quickly and can be combined with any of the other group courses.

Exam Preparation Course

Exam preparation courses are for those students who already have a good level of the language (usually a minimum of A2 or B1) and need or want to take an exam that will prove the level they have achieved. The preparation courses are generally designed to help learners understand the content and format of the exam, and to pass the exam. They are not generally designed to improve language ability, although this may be a bi-product of taking the course. There are exam preparation courses for a range of languages including English (IELTS, FCE, CAE, CPE), Spanish (A Level, DELE) French (DELF) and many others.

Business Language Courses

These courses are for learners who wish to improve their language skills for the work place. In order to take these courses learners generally need A2 or B1 level before they can join the class. The classes focus on business vocabulary and functional language that is needed in an office environment.

Language for Specific Purposes

These courses are similar to the business language courses but will focus on a specific industry. Examples of this are: law, engineering, aviation, oil and gas, fashion etc. These courses are for learners who wish to improve their language skills for a particular industry or subject area due to the fact that they either work in the area or want to, or study the subject or want to.
