Greetings in Spanish

There many ways to greet people, depending on the formality or time of the day. Ways to greet people in Spanish include: Buenos días – Good morning, Buenas tardes – Good afternoon/evening, Buenas noches – Good night. And more informally: ¡Hola! and ¿Qué tal? – Hi / How are you? Other ways to say ‘How are you?’ include ¿Qué tal estás? and ¿Cómo estás?

Introduction in Spanish

If you are looking to introduce yourself you could be saying Mi nombre es … – My name is, Me llamo … – I’m called …, and to ask someone’s name you can say ¿Cómo se llama Usted?, or ¿Cómo te llamas?, which is the informal way to put this question.

Would you like to know where someone comes from? You could ask them ¿De dónde eres?, to which the reply might be Soy de … – I’m from …

Goodbye in Spanish

Ways to say goodbye include Hasta luego, or Hasta la vista – See you later, and Hasta mañana – See you tomorrow. More formally you can say Adiós – Goodbye.

Shopping / Eating out

If you are out eating or shopping you might find the following Spanish phrases useful: ¿Cuánto cuesta? and ¿Cuánto cuesta esto? – How much?; Por favor, please/excuse me; ¡Perdón! – Excuse me; Gracias/Muchas gracias – Thank you / Thank you very much; ¿Dónde está el baño? – Where’s the toilet/bathroom?

Or you might be asking/saying for something specific: Camarero – Waiter; Una cerveza – A beer; Una coca-cola – A coke; Salud! – Cheers / Good health! (when celebrating); ¡Por favor, la cuenta! – The bill, please!

If you have difficulty understanding what people say to you in Spanish, you could say No entiendo and No comprendo – I don’t understand; Por favor hable más despacio – Please speak more slowly, or ¿Hablas inglés? – Do you speak English? (in an informal way).
